John Bowlby
Being in a relationship may start easy – and then life happens. I typically hear things like “We aren’t a team anymore.” “I can’t get it right with you.” “We just have trouble communicating.” “Everything turns into a power struggle.” “I miss us – why do you pull away from me?” Maybe you’ve tried talking it out and it goes nowhere. You need skills, you need support, and you need someone with a realistic, unbiased perspective to work with the two of you to rediscover your connection. I am here to facilitate connection and growth. Therapy will begin with at least one conjoint session and then individual sessions with each partner. From there we will collaborate on goals and I will propose a treatment approach. From there it is a process of both comfort and challenge as you grow more confident in your relationship. I am skilled in both Gottman Method Couples Therapy (GMCT) and Sue Johnson’s Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT). I think of them as complimentary top down and bottom up interventions to de-escalate and reset your relationship.
It's so normal to get overwhelmed as parents. And sometimes difficult issues come up with your kids that you just don’t know what to do with. Or conversely, maybe you feel the need to wear a mask around your parents and you just can’t do it anymore. I don’t have all the answers, but I will work with you to find them. I’m trained to see the behavioral feedback loops that reinforce negative behaviors – nagging - resistance, criticizing - defending, and on and on. Often, parents and children just need a third party to help them negotiate the right balance of boundaries and connection. These relationships are so important and so foundational. Invest in family counseling now!
You may not be feeling great about life, but you and your story are important. You are the expert on you – I bring wisdom about thoughts and feelings and behaviors. When working with individuals, I continue to draw from my relational/systems training, as well as standard individual approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy My favorite approaches are MIndfulness and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Using IFS together, we can identify your inner conflicts and integrate them into a confident, compassionate, whole person. I also specialize in recovery from trauma and use EMDR therapy . This is useful for both single incident trauma and complex trauma.
